About the Position

The Festival Programmer develops and oversees the artistic vision of the Vancouver Queer Film Festival. A core competency of the festival is to bring diverse communities together around LGBT issues, thereby, the incumbent will possess a strong curatorial and/or artistic practice deeply rooted in engaging communities around social issues. This is a management position with up to six seasonal direct reports. The Festival Programmer reports to our Director of Programs & HR.

Responsibilities:

§         Oversee the vision and implementation of all festival programming including panel discussions, workshops, spotlights, guest curators, artist awards, etc.

§         Research, solicit and screen film, video and other art forms for presentation at the festival.

§         Build relationships with artists, distributors and other art groups.

§         Leads and inspires the programming committee.

§         Serve as key media spokesperson for the festival.

§         Accountable for leading and managing short-term festival contracts that include technicians, parties and guest relations.

§         Grant and report writing.

§         Manage administrative aspects of festival programming that include film databases, artist and distributor fees, generating timelines, programming department budget and attending staff meetings and annual strategic planning sessions.

Qualifications:

§         Minimum 3 years experience programming media art, or curatorial equivalent

§         Extensive knowledge of queer independent film and video

§         Demonstrated collaborative leadership and experience in community development

§         Exceptional written and verbal communication skills

§         Relevant experience working within a social-profit setting

§         Project management is essential, HR management an asset

Employment terms:

This is a year round position based on 24 hours per week and includes full time hours, at 37.5 hours per week, from April 1 to August 31.

§         Start date January 14, 2013.

§         Comprehensive salary package starting at $40,000 per annum and including extended health benefits, wellness funds, professional development funds and opportunities for travel to Canadian and international film festivals.
