Want to queerify your high school?

Out On Screen is teaming up with Gay Straight Alliances to bring queer movies into high schools across the Lower Mainland. The films are followed with a question + answer chat session, and when possible we bring the filmmaker with us!

Here’s how it works:

  1. Contact us and we’ll set a date to come to your school.
  2. Select from one of our film packages. Here's a sample of some of our film packages. (Inquire to get a complete list.)

Sound too easy? It gets better… we even bring pizza!

Why? Because homophobia and bullying are serious issues. Out On Screen is proud to work in conjunction with GSAs to make high schools a safer place for queer youth to learn and socialise.

The current social context of bullying in schools is of great concern and the statistics are alarming when detailing the experiences of queer youth:

  • 34% of queer youth say they have been threatened with violence at school
  • 17% say they have been physically assaulted
  • 71% say they have seriously considered suicide, while 46% claim to have actually attempted suicide
Facts:
*1999 McCreary Centre Society’s study and publication Being Out: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Youth in BC: An Adolescent Survey

Out in Schools has received terrific feedback from queer youth and their sponsor teachers.

"It gives straight students a chance to see into the lives of queer youth, something mainstream media certainly isn't helping with."

"I found the film interesting and enlightening. I found I related well to a few teens followed in the film."

"The discussion was helpful in expressing what I felt during the film."

Don’t worry if your school doesn’t have a Gay Straight Alliance. We’re happy to work with all schools.
