| In celebration of this year’s Festival
Focus on performance (pg. 28),
local curators Kris Nelson and Maya
Suess bring you Off Screen and
Unexpected. Discover some of
Vancouver’s brightest queer performers
in installations, interactions and
interruptions at Festival events, with
rumours of bathroom burlesque,
interactive moustache-wearing and
performance installations in film lobbies
and line-ups.
Off Screen and Unexpected is
guaranteed to spring up when you least
expect it. See as many as you can see in
this scavenger hunt-style series. Look for
works by legendary sex performer Amber
Dawn, local artistic troublemakers Pearl
Chuang and Jen Kovak, the endlessly
playful Maya Suess and bio-queen allstar
Coral Short.
Kris Nelson is a multi-disciplinary theatre
artist, creating original work through his
company, Brownbike, producing for the
Magnetic North Theatre Festival (coming
to Vancouver in 2008) and the PuSh
International Performing Arts Festival and
developing the work of new playwrights.
Maya Suess works in the disciplines of
performance art, theatre, installation and
cabaret, and easily navigates the spaces
in-between. Her work has been shown in
galleries, theatres and at film festivals and
in underground sites in Europe, the United
States, Canada and Japan. |
