Masterclass with John Cameron Mitchell

Take a page from the JCM playbook with this rare opportunity to learn from the brain behind Hedwig and the Angry Inch (pg. 31). Focussed around “Creating a Screenplay Through Improv”, this masterclass will give artists (and film fans) an opportunity to learn more about collaborative practices between actors and directors, with specific reference to Mitchell’s award-winning second film, Shortbus. Expect tips on script development, working with actors, directing improv and creative communication.

This masterclass is part of the VQFF’s annual FilmForward Director’s Spotlight.

John Cameron Mitchell directed, wrote and starred in the film Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001), for which he received the Best Director and Audience awards at the Sundance Film Festival and the Grand Prix at Deauville Film Festival. Mitchell was also nominated for a Golden Globe as Best Actor. He was executive producer of Jonathan Caouette’s award-winning documentary Tarnation (2004). His latest film, Shortbus (2006) won awards at the Zurich, Athens and Gijon Film Festivals.
